  • Reel Integrity: Reels must be robust enough to support the cable's weight without deformation. Flanges should be undamaged to protect the cable edges.

  • Secure Packaging: The cable ends must be securely sealed with waterproof caps to prevent moisture ingress into the conductors and insulation. The ends should then be firmly fastened to the reel flanges to avoid unspooling during transit.

  • Choosing the Location: An ideal storage area is dry, well-ventilated, and protected from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and weather. Indoor storage is strongly preferred. Outdoor storage should be a last resort and requires enhanced protective measures.

  • Reel Positioning: Reels should be stored on a flat, stable surface. It is best to store them horizontally (with the core parallel to the ground). If stacked, do not exceed the manufacturer's recommended height to prevent crushing the bottom reels. Always use adequate dunnage (spacers) between reels.

  • Environmental Protection: For outdoor storage, reels must be covered with durable, waterproof tarpaulins that allow for air circulation to prevent condensation ("sweating") inside the cover. The storage area should be free from oils, chemicals, and solvents.


Special Considerations and Long-Term Storage


  • Avoiding Bending Radius Violation: Never remove cables from the reel for storage in loose coils. The reel maintains the cable's minimum bending radius. Coiling on the ground can easily violate this radius, damaging internal insulation and shields.

  • Long-Term Vigilance: For storage periods exceeding six months, a regular inspection schedule is crucial. Check for damaged sealing caps, rodent infestation, moisture under tarps, and the integrity of the reels and cables.

  • Temperature Management: In cold climates, cable jackets (especially PVC) can become brittle. Special care is needed when handling or unspooling cables in low temperatures to avoid cracking.


Treating cable transportation and storage as a critical quality control step is an investment in long-term system reliability. The hidden damage from impact, crushing, moisture, or excessive bending can lead to partial discharge, insulation breakdown, or premature failure years after installation. By following these structured protocols—from proper reel handling to creating a controlled storage environment—engineers and contractors ensure that the cable's designed performance is fully realized, safeguarding the electrical infrastructure's integrity from the very beginning.
